Key Dates and Deadlines for Limited Companies in the UK
As a limited company, you’ll have your own personal tax deadlines determined by your company’s accounting period.
Corporation Tax Deadlines
- When to Register: 3 months after your incorporation date
- When to submit your tax return: 12 months after the end of your accounting period
- When to pay: 9 months after the end of your accounting period
How To Find Your Accounting Period
Your ‘accounting period’ for corporation tax is the time covered by your company tax return. It cannot be longer than 12 months and is usually the same as the financial year covered by your business’ annual accounts.
HMRC will send a letter to your registered office address notifying you of the dates for your first accounting period.
Other Company Filing Deadlines
- Confirmation Statement: Filed every 12 months from the date of your last statement. I.e. if you first filed when incorporating on 12/01/2024 your next statement is due by 26/01/2025 (14 days after the confirmation period date ends). However, if you filed early, the date you filed is your new due date.
- Annual Accounts: Must be filed 9 months after the end of your financial year
- Dormant Accounts: 9 months after your tax accounting year ends.
VAT Deadlines
Applying for VAT is voluntary if your turnover is under £90,000, but compulsory if it is £90,000 and over.
You usually need to send a VAT Return to HMRC every 3 months. This is known as your ‘accounting period’.
- VAT Registration: Voluntary before reaching the £90,000 threshold or 30 days after you exceed the £90,000 threshold.
- Submitting VAT Returns: 1 calendar month and 7 days after the end of your accounting period
- Paying VAT Owed: 1 calendar month and 7 days after the end of your accounting period
- Annual Account Scheme: 2 months after the end of the 12-month accounting period
- Businesses on payments account (POA): Monthly, due at the end of the month
