Eligible for a Company Grant?
Various factors can affect the likelihood of a company formation being awarded a grant. Some of these are:
The physical positioning of your company
Even with the United Kingdom, some areas have greater grant funding than others. The tradition "north - south divide" often find that a greater proportion of money is earmarked for the northern counties for regeneration. The "prosperous" south however receives considerably less in overall funding except for inner city areas where deprivation is high.
Category of company
Small and medium sized businesses are generally separated from larger companies in the grant allocation process. Certain funds may be for example to encourage new businesses to an area, whereas others would be focused large scale projects such as attracting foreign investment.
The process required to attract the correct type of participants for each would be different and hence viewing them separately seems to make sense.
Type of business
Certain business sectors may attract more funding than others. Traditional industries like coal, car manufacturing, ship building and so on are declined in recent years and therefore the areas most affected are subject to increased funding.
What the grant will be used for.
Capital based grants are more attractive to those providing funds than revenue based grants. The reason for this is that companies requiring working capital funding are more likely to be perceived as mismanaged in that the directors should have anticipated the requirements for day to day funds and worked out measures to provide these.
Capital grants however lend themselves to be involved in expansion and growth which is often a prime criterion in fund allocation.
